1). Mormon is still far from being main stream, if people think it as cult, it's not surprising. BTW, anyone caught "Big Love" on HBO?

This is the least sensible thing to say. This single statement was the origin of anti-semitism in the west for thousands of yrs, esp. by the Roman catholics churches. It was later further propagated by Luther's teaching, influenced the whole Lutheran churches for the next four hundreds of yrs. Eventually it became a main stay in Nazi's doctrine, hence the Holocaust.
What you said is highly offensive, prob. you did in the deep South. Anywhere else you would have been challenged.
