City washes its hands of '2nd dirtiest' ranking
BY JOSE MARTINEZ
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
We've wiped away the crime, but not the grime.
A new survey in Reader's Digest trashes New York as the country's second-filthiest city while heaping praise on sparkling backwaters such as Portland, Ore., Columbus, Ohio, and even upstate Buffalo.
But at least this isn't Chicago. As usual, the Second City placed behind New York, claiming the dubious honor of America's dirtiest burg.
New York City sanitation officials were not amused by the report, which ranked the country's 50 biggest metro areas on pollution rates, toxic emissions, waste sites and size of the sanitation force.
"It's a silly report. It really is," sniffed Kathy Dawkins, a spokeswoman for the Department of Sanitation.
Dawkins pointed to statistics showing that 91.1% of city streets were judged to be "acceptably clean" in the latest street cleanliness scorecard. In 1980, a mere 53% of the streets made the grade. "We really take great exception to this report," Dawkins said.
Once home to the world's largest landfill and piles of trash high enough to be considered Catskill foothills, New York has cleaned up its act. But the report contends that the Big Apple is rotten.
Hippie-dippy Portland, with a population of 529,000, won the title of most pristine, followed by San Jose, Calif., Buffalo and Columbus. San Francisco - where politicians wrangle over the right of the homeless to defecate in public - placed fifth.
