If not, China really has to give it some serious consideration to privatize a few big oil/gas companies in order to compete globally. If China doesn't act now, in my humble opinion, it will be in monumental trouble in the next 5-10 years. Here is why. China's economic growth is about 7-10% each year recently, but its appetite for energy has increased 15% yearly. Due to its shortage of oil/gas reserves inside China, it has to import up to 30% of its oil needs each year. Last summer many cities in China experienced electricity shortage. In downtown Shanghai the neo lights were off after 9pm as I noticed in Feb. when looking out of my apt. window. I had to suggest to my parents to stock instant noodles in case the elevators stop running due to the shortage. China currently is the world's second largest oil consumer taking 12% of the world oil supply. The rate of this demand increases 4-5 times more than the rest of the world! Also, 30% of the coal in the world were burned in China, which provides 65% of China's energy needs. Coal is relatively cheap and easy to obtain. However, cheap things are no good. Coal has very low energy efficiency and causes water/air pollution! What is the largest problem in 21th century?? Energy!! How many people are dying everyday for energy? With energy or without energy, that is the question!
