commission wise + bid / ask spread to pay on both in and out... a lot of people made money in options here and there. overall i never heard any retail made consistent money in the long run.
I would say the same thing about trading futures. you may hear big profit every now and then. the rule of teh thumb is 5% of retail makes money after trading for 1 year and only 10% stayed in the game. out of this 10%, less than 10% stays in the game after 5 years. you can figure out the odds against you....
