some middleman companies in US charge 1 to 2 percent for any money that they bring in without up-front payment. In real life, I see friend helps friend to find money without getting cash payment, but favors were returned by some other sorts.
Obviously there is no gold standard, as each case is different. It is all about finding a match between your comfortable offer and your friend's expectation.
