Senior Product Manager - Beijing/Shanghai/Taipei

Senior Product Manager – Beijing/Taipei

Do you have a passion for creating great products? Google is looking for individuals who combine a great instinct for developing compelling products with the technical aptitude to work with a world class engineering team and the business sense to drive local product goals and strategies.

Department Overview: The Product Development team ensures that Google has the best worldwide product offerings by ana lyzing, positioning, packaging, and promoting our solutions across a variety of countries and markets where Google does business. The team is responsible for the product throughout the execution cycle, and works closely with the engineering group to continuously improve systems, processes, and production.

Major functions:
• Initiate new products and product enhancements to meet existing or anticipated market needs
• Determine product specifications and docu ment in a Product Requirements Docu ment (PRD)
• Initiate and prioritize projects within engineering; track product development; develop product launch plans
• Engage closely with the engineering team to help determine the best technical implementation methods as well as a reasonable execution schedule
• Work with a cross-functional internal team (e.g. sales, client services, marketing, legal, etc.) to gather customer feedback and ensure smooth and successful launches
• Establish short and long term product goals and strategies

Experience / Skills:
• Computer science degree or equivalent
• Demonstrated experience shipping products (concept to launch)
• Strong understanding of user needs in China and an innovative history of addressing them
• Market knowledge of Internet-related industries
• Excellent organizational skills including the ability to build effective working relationships

Top Key Selling Points for PM Candidates:

1. The Product Manager acts as a true general manager within Google, and has full responsibility for the product vision and road map. PM’s are tasked with understanding user's issues, defining the product, securing distribution, preparing sales, and working with partners. There is no central strategy division within Google, product strategy lies with the PM.

2. Google continues to encourage employees to innovate, which is why everyone is expected to spend 20% of their time working on a new idea. It starts with 1 engineer or product manager to prove the product by creating a successful prototype and recruiting others to devote their 20% time to the project. It bubbles up from there, and weak ideas are weeded out before any major investment is made.

3. Google products are not U.S. centric, but truly takes into consideration users on the global platform. Google has product teams located all over the world (not just domestically), and products are localized/internationalized to meet the specific and unique needs of customers in the various regions.

4. Google will not compromise its brand for money. If it does not help the user, Google won't do it. Therefore, unlike P&L environments where profit/revenues are the bottom-line, we focus on the customer and building the best possible product that they will use over and over again. Market share and usage is how Google measures success, the rest (revenue/profits) follow. Even in this model, Google has averaged net profit margins of 28% (or more) in the last six quarters.

5. Beyond innovation, Google is always looking at how to make products that exist in the market radically better. For example, prior to Gmail, web mail had little innovation since hotmail defined the category. Google looked at the problem and decided folders were inadequate to manage the 100+ emails that many of us receive per day. So we focused on search, further innovated with threading, and then leveraged our competency at structuring large systems to give everyone a gigabyte of storage at launch.

6. All employees have true accessibility to everyone in the company, including Larry, Sergey and Eric Schmidt. Unlike other large companies in which there is a true hierarchy of communication before reaching the top, Google has an open door policy that encourages open communication.

7. Google has managed to maintain a start-up culture and desires entrepreneurial professionals to take their passions and innovative minds and run with their ideas here at Google. And unlike the tug of war often involved with receiving additional funding from VC’s after a 1st round of funding, Google has the resources and capital necessary to take a concept/idea and make it come to fruition without the painful process of long timelines and the subsequent loss of market share from others who get to the market before you.

8. Google products have an immediate impact on the world… the moment a product is launched, it reaches hundreds of millions of “global” users on day one. Many companies have to build strong branding and marketing campaigns to get access to that number of users/customers. Brand alone won’t do it, but our brand is so strong all over the world, in every country, that it is a fantastic leverage point to introduce new products.

9. Google is growing stronger with it’s infrastructure, allowing for even stronger usuage across the world as market share continues to grow – allowing Google to scale to meet the demand without diminishing quality of service.
