Gutsy timers, cover contrarians, and a superbull's crystal ball

When the market suffers such a dramatic and speedy downturn, as it's done over the past week, many investors may find it difficult to steel themselves and remain confident in their investment strategies. At times like these, it's simply too tempting to allow emotions to rule the intellect.
That's why when reviewing the market's recent turmoil, Mark Hulbert opted to remain "studiously unemotional" and report on the current sentiment among the top-performing market-timing newsletters over the trailing ten year period. Hulbert writes that all of the newsletters included in his survey were at least moderately bullish, with at least a few editors reaffirming this stance in the wake of the market's bloodletting.
And Peter Brimelow checked in last week with famed superbull Don Hays of the institutional service Hays Advisory. At least prior to the market's meltdown, Hays believed that the bull market could persist until early 2009, at which point a cyclical bear market could be ready to assert itself.....
