Organization Summary
The technical publications department develops and maintains user documentation, such as user manuals and online help, to enable our customers to quickly and easily understand how to get the most out of our products.
The technical publications department will:
• Design publications to help customers succeed in their work
• Plan projects to ensure compliance with company priorities of quality, cost, and time-to-market
• Stay abreast of current development practices and innovations in technical communications
• Question old habits and seek new ways to improve the development process and information product design

Position Summary
A senior technical writer researches product technology, then designs and develops user documentation appropriate to customer needs. The user documentation should be a blend of concepts, procedures, and reference information structured to help the targeted audiences use the company product(s) in their jobs with minimal effort.
The senior writer is required to work on site during regular business hours. Occasional overtime is required, particularly as projects near completion.
Classification Factors
• Receives guidance from the Technical Publications manager in terms of broad goals and objectives, and then establishes the methods to attain them within the constraints of the company’s development process.
• Does not require close supervision, but works collaboratively with other writers, project team members, and the Technical Publications manager.
• Does not supervise other employees, but may be called upon to act as a lead writer in a project.
Major Functions
• Research and learn product technology
• Research and understand customer needs and business priorities
• Develop plans and specifications for user documentation projects
• Write content appropriate to customer job tasks and abilities
• Support company quality standards and development processes
• Effectively organize and maintain source files
• Initiate and track draft reviews
• Report project status to management as required
• Provide peer editing support for other writers
• Must be a constructive, pro-active project team member
Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in technical writing
• 5-7 years recent experience in technical writing in structured development environments
• Professional-level command of technical writing in English
• Proficiency with Adobe FrameMaker
• Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and PhotoShop (or equivalent applications)
• Able to develop and manage multiple projects concurrently
• Able to consistently meet project deadlines
• Able to get along well with people of various backgrounds and personalities
• Attention to detail
• Able to effectively interview and learn from subject matter experts
