M&A activity has picked up a bit, albeit some of the merging going on is with the governments around the world. Lloyd's saw a $25.6B stake in its bank purchased by the UK government after it failed to raise the cash via traditional investors. Citi is working on a deal with Morgan Stanley to form a joint venture between Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley to create the biggest brokerage house....and the list goes on as Royal Bank of Scotland looks to spin off its insurance arm, Commerzbank gets a nice capital investment from Germany, and a South African billionaire is eyeing Lehman's merchant banking business. The Citi move is interesting after the government's capital injection and the possibility that it was just not enough. Citi stock getting pummeled on the thought.
I suggested last week that it is very difficult to see where these currencies are going in the short run as they are not following traditional trading patterns. Now fuel for the fodder....when traditional investment vehicles like Wall Street decline, "safe-haven" currencies such as JPY and CHF should gain. Well, JPY gained 1.8% while the CHF lost 3% last week. Normally commodity currencies move in tandem but last week, we saw the CAD gain 1.5% while the AUD lost over 1%. And now for the strangest move....GBP gained 7% last week against its fellow European currencies and the EUR saw a significant loss. Strange beer we are drinking these days. And then to boot....with movements such as this, traders are continually adjusting their positions and in the process, overshooting their mark...ie. way short GBP and long EUR. One thing....I am not whining about how hard my job is....believe me, I love it!
So this week....ECB reports on Thursday and the market is calling for a greater than 50 bps cut. I would be shocked to see the ECB cut anymore than 50.....
