if you adopt the strict definition of prostitution, i.e., having sexual intercourse with other people for money, then most japanese geisha may not be categorized as hookers.
but what i learn from history books and related novels, these geisha do have intimate interactions with their clients. so in a sense, they are prostitutes.
i believe this is a tough question, just as cliton's definition of "sex".
