By "dirty details" I am not talking about the way they sell
cars retail, I do not understand why BMW just want to have
one dealer in Beijing.
Assume profit margin on a typical BMW is about US$5 K,
and her annual overhead with the showroom, sales staff,
inventory, tax, insurance, etc is about US$5 million (is it too
small or about right?), they need to sell about 1000 to break even, and anything beyond would be just pure profit. If they
have exclusive distribution in Beijing, maybe their margin
would be lower, say, $2500 a car, so need to sell 2000
cars a year. Anything beyond that would be pure profit.
This is a mature business, and manufactuers won't leave
money on the table and give the dealer too easy a ride.
How the hell can a dealer have exclusive distribution of
BMW in a city as big as Beijing? There must be many stories
we do not know.
But the real value is that they will gain access to the most
affluent and status-conscious people in Beijing, and maybe
jump onto the band wagon of other lucrative deals through
these connections.
Pure amaturer speculation, other gurus pls correct me if
it's wrong.
BTW next time someone tell you she is 本性纯 with a straight
face, tell her that you are Mother Teresa
