Yahoo has over 8 million lines of C and C++ code which are doing all the heavy lifting at back end, there are over 3 million line of Perl code too. Yahoo is very much a C/C++ shop first and foremost - PHP is used as a template system (alongside several proprietary systems) to allow easy modification of high level behavior. It would be premature to conclude that PHP scales with the fact that Yahoo uses it in some of its application, because Yahoo could have chosen Java or Perl instead. My point is that scalability and maintainability come from thoughtful elegant software design, good programmers make difference, period.
I doubt that anyone would argue that PHP is excellent for web development. However every language has pros and cons, we should choose the right tool which is the most suitable for each application project. Where PHP stumbles is when you need to move off the web or when you need to write complex business logic that is not solely driven by a web tier. PHP also fails when you need to integrate diverse transactional resources in an efficient manner. Not all business applications can be suitably implemented in PHP. It comes to business analysis again, further business development for haiguinet should also be put into consideration when technical design is ongoing. Anyhow, if it is just an online community, IMHO, it doesn’t matter using PHP/MySQL, J2EE or Asp/.NET, just go with good smart resource you can find, what the hell, it is just another web site!
