It is probably due to my technical background, that I always want to examine the fundamentals of technical feasibility, before I judge whether a business deal makes sense. In many cases, I see that when executives want to strike a deal, they showed unwillingness to really listen to opposite ideas about technical feasibility. Especially when I get to know more about some chinese companies, I find that what they talked about is usually 10 folds bigger than what they really can achieve. They are relatively short-sighted, and they are intentionally doing that, because they want to grab some quick return (being money or 政绩)then they will move on to something else. So I often face a dilemma: do I stick to my principles or do I do what they all do? The first one will probably make it almost impossible to make any business deals. But the second one will make more deals but I don't have enough confidence that the deals will actually make good for both parties.
Another specific question for Principal An: if you work on a high-tech deal, how much do you (the investment bankers) value the technical inputs about the feasibility? Wouldn't the making of the deal (which means money to you) take priority over the techinical details on whether the deal makes sense?
