Guess this author is a direct source for both you and Ziliao. All I can come up is a recap of articles in recent issues of The Economist, the only magazine, which, as far as I know, leaves out the names of individual contributors. It does cite and credit Andy Xie and Shan Weijian, among others, in a quite blunt discussion over China's current economic and financial conditions. (web link: economist.com/surveys)
The Economist has recently published several analyses on the stunning performance of the Australian econonmy in the past 12 years and the challenges confronting it today.
Australia's outstanding economic performance has resulted from prudent monetary and fiscal policies as well as structural reforms. Lower trade barriers, more flexible labor practices and deregulated product markets have also helped boost productivity.
The two primary threats are its stronger currency and its overheated housing market.
Over half of Australia's exports go to Asia, whose governments are known for their determination in holding down local currencies. At the same time, Australia's current account deficit is the biggest among the developed countries.
What makes its house-price boom even more fragile than in the U.K. or U.S. is its buy-to-let market, which accounted for nearly half of all new mortgage borrowing last year. Household debt has also dramatically increased from 85% of disposable income in 1996 to over 140% at the end of 2003. One in every six families owns an investment property. Average home prices rose close to 20% last year alone.
Housing has become such an important part of the country's wealth, and a significant fall in prices could even tip the economy into recession.
